Parlez-vous français? Broadcasting meteorology major Alex St. Pe does, and this summer a paid internship with a manufacturer of LIDAR (laser-radar) remote atmospheric observation systems will give her an opportunity for an unofficial "internship" in her foreign language minor.
The Brandon senior grew up very aware of her rich family history, which she traces back to France. Knowing her genealogy, she had always hoped to be able to experience the country firsthand. But she had little idea that her profession of choice would open the door for such an experience.
While attending the American Meteorological Society annual conference in January, St. Pe met the director of research for Leosphere LIDAR Environmental Observations and soon was offered the paid internship that, in addition to allowing her French residence, will permit travel to Russia for an exhibit.
"I've been so focused on my education that I say I've been running a marathon," she laughed. "French language and meteorology are completely different fields," St. Pe said. "I have always wanted to be able to bring together the two things I am most passionate about. This is a unique opportunity, and the university has given me the tools to make my dream a reality."
