Senior Carl Smith has always loved the power of the written word, but never thought of pursuing it as a career path until a community college English professor recognized his writing ability and began to encourage him to consider a writing career.
As a result, the former history major is now seeking a communication degree and is the newest editor-in-chief for the Reflector student newspaper.
After spending the past two years as a member of the editorial staff, he jumped at the chance to learn more about the management side of the newspaper industry when the position came available.
As a staff writer, news editor and copy editor for two years, Smith had gained a wealth of experience in the editorial process. When the position for editor-in-chief became available, he saw it as an opportunity to broaden his knowledge to include the management end of the industry.
"In my new role, I get to see the process from beginning to end. It's going to be a great chance for me to experience what it takes to lead the production of the paper and everything that goes into it."
