Bob Wolverton can tell you about the story behind Venus brand pencils and the origin of the dog days of summer. If you wonder about the myth of Sisyphus or the tale of why crows have black feathers, he's your guy.
From translating Latin to discussing stories passed from generation to generation or culture to culture, the MSU professor of foreign languages said he loves myths for their ability to connect people through shared beliefs and stories. Students say they love taking his classes to experience his passion for storytelling and teaching.
Wolverton's love for legend, myth and stories has kept him connected to many people through the years.
"I was kind of like the Google or Wikipedia before they existed," he said.
Often a guest speaker at civic and community groups for his talks on traditions and holidays, Wolverton said he's surprised by how many products and stories use nuggets of classic mythology.
If you think you have a new idea, come and talk to me," he often tells students.
