When Jeremiah Dumas began working in 2006 to help found the Starkville Community Market, it was about more than just peas and carrots.
The landscape architecture assistant professor was looking to create an environment that celebrated the local culture and offered visitors an opportunity to experience not only locally grown fruits and vegetables, but also the handiwork of artisans and craftsmen from the area.
"The market is a great opportunity for families and individuals of all ages to come browse our vendors' offerings while learning a little bit about local culture," he said. "Visitors can enjoy the bluegrass music by Boardtown Boys while watching potters and wool spinners demonstrate their crafts."
Located in downtown Starkville, the Starkville Community Market is modeled after similar markets in larger cities, including the French Market in New Orleans.
While the market is currently only open during the growing season, Dumas said plans are to eventually move toward making the Starkville Community Market a year-round experience.
