STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State’s Department of Art is welcoming back a 2010 graphic design alumnus for a public talk and exhibition on the Starkville campus.
Carl Carbonell, a Salt Lake City, Utah-based graphic designer, illustrator and screenprinter, will be on campus Tuesday [Oct. 2] working with art students in Associate Professor Suzanne Powney’s fall letterpress course.
On Thursday [Oct. 4] from 11 a.m.-noon, members of the campus and surrounding communities are welcome to attend Carbonell’s talk, “Idle Hands are the Devil’s Playthings.” The program is being held in the Robert and Freda Harrison Auditorium at Giles Hall, home to MSU’s College of Architecture, Art and Design.
Also on Thursday, a public reception will be held from 6-7 p.m. to celebrate the opening of “The Carl Carbonell Show!” exhibition on display Oct. 4-Nov. 3 at MSU’s Visual Arts Center Gallery at 808 University Drive in Starkville. Refreshments and music will be available.
Before moving to Utah in 2016, Carbonell spent time working as a designer and letterpress printer at Hatch Show Print in Nashville. Carbonell sells his own work at his online shop, Meat & 3 Printing Co.
Lori Neuenfeldt, MSU art instructor and gallery director, said Carbonell’s show serves as a perfect way to continue the celebration of the Department of Art’s 50th anniversary.
“Coming off the success of the Spring Alumni Exhibition, the Department of Art Galleries felt encouraged to focus on continuing to spotlight alumni,” Neuenfeldt said. “Assistant Professor Claire Gipson suggested Carl for a gallery exhibition based on his unique graphic style and his ability to relate to students.”
