STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State’s fire prevention and life safety officer is being honored by the professional organization whose members administer and enforce state building and related codes.

Alicia F. Musselwhite recently was named 2017 Fire Code Official of the Year by the Building Officials Association of Mississippi.

A Florida native and longtime Starkville resident, the MSU alumna was cited for a career that has “contributed immeasurably to the organization and its constitutional precepts.”

Musselwhite, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the university, assumed her current duties in 2009. She previously was laboratory manager in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences.

Her current role is part of MSU’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety, a division of the Office of Research and Economic Development.

At a brief campus ceremony held earlier this month, Musselwhite accepted the honor from B.J. Malley, deputy state fire marshal. Joining them were Amy Tuck, the land-grant institution’s vice president for campus services; Michael S. Parsons, its environmental and health safety director; and Glynn Babb, emergency and safety officer for the Board of Trustees, State Institutions of Higher Learning.
