STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State University's Learning Center in the College of Education is reminding students of year-round resources and raising awareness of new offerings, including an ACT preparation course and a program designed to give a head start to those beginning their college experience.
Established in the late 1970s, The Learning Center (TLC) serves as a university-wide academic support system for students at all levels.
Under the direction of Anna L. Dill, the center offers learning seminars as well as free and private tutoring. Supplemental instruction, state-of-the-art computer labs, credit courses including a graduate writing course are available. Additionally, GRE, ACT, and Praxis I & II preparation workshops are offered.
"The Learning Center is constantly providing helpful instructional resource material and equipment to better serve the university and support faculty. Additionally, The Learning Center offers two courses each summer in the College Ready program, a summer program designed to give students extra support as they start their college experience," Dill said.
"We recently introduced our first ACT prep workshop and had a great turnout," she added. "We're excited and looking forward to continuing that program as well as our S4 Series."
The Successful Student Speaker Series, known as S4, has featured four guest speakers, as well as professional development seminars and related book signings.
Dill said seminars are taught on technology, test taking strategies, writing tips, information processing, among others.
"With three full-time faculty, two part-time, and seven adjunct professors, the staff members of The Learning Center are dedicated to implementing the best learning resources for students across campus," Dill said.
The center also sponsors the Learning Skills Support, Promise Student Support, and College Achievement Support programs to guide students in specific populations in maintaining high achievement levels and offering individualized academic monitoring to ensure student success.
"We work with everyone's schedule to make sure those who wish to have individual tutoring sessions get the help they need to succeed in the classroom," Dill added.
She noted that The Learning Center also is home to Bulldog Toastmasters. The student organization provides a supportive and positive learning environment to help students develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
