STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State's English department and Shackouls Honors College will present an Oct. 21 reading by author, editor, director and teacher Phong Nguyen.

Beginning at 5 p.m. in the third-floor Fowlkes Auditorium of the university's Colvard Student Union, Nguyen will share selections from his new work of fiction, "Pages from the Textbook of Alternate History." The program is free and open to all.

Released earlier this year by Queen's Ferry Press, his 256-page book asks the question: What if history makers had succeeded in the fulfillment of their best-laid plans?

Nguyen, a Vietnamese American born in Massachusetts and reared in New Jersey, is an associate professor of English at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. His first book, "Memory Sickness and Other Stories" (Elixir Press, 2011), was honored with the Elixir Press Award.

In addition to teaching fiction and American literature, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee doctoral graduate is co-editor of Pleiades, a journal of new writing. For additional information, see www.phongvnguyen.com/htdocs/bio.html.
