STARKVILLE, Miss.--The College of Architecture, Art and Design's art department will host a visit from a contemporary Texas artist and educator next week at Mississippi State University.
While on the Starkville campus, adjunct art instructor Mike Stephens of Del Mar College in Corpus Christi will conduct a Wednesday [Oct. 29] printmaking workshop for MSU art majors in Briscoe Hall.
Along with Italian printmaking creations on loan from the Mississippi Museum of Art's extensive permanent collection, 10 of Stephens' woodcut prints are currently on display through Oct. 31 at the university's McComas Hall Art Gallery.
Stephens also will be on hand at 4 p.m. Wednesday to discuss his works with patrons in the ground-floor gallery. A free, public reception in his honor takes place 5-6:30 p.m. that day in the same location.
Seeking to make social commentary through the application of traditional woodcut techniques combined with current images from popular culture, Stephens holds a master of fine arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Nationally recognized for his powerful large-scaled works, he employs a graphic comic-book style developed in childhood to explore his place within chaotic scenarios of modern society.
Stephens is a bachelor of fine arts graduate of Texas A & M University at Corpus Christi, and holds an associate's degree from Del Mar. For more, visit http://woodencyclops.com.
