STARKVILLE, Miss.--Spring semester fundraising efforts by the Kappa Sigma social fraternity at Mississippi State chapter will assist one of its alumni and two charitable organizations in Starkville.
Through its Charity Classic football game last month, the university chapter raised more than $94,000 in personal and private donations that will go toward medical expenses for 2001 initiate John Clark Packer. A 2005 MSU communication/public relations graduate, the Madison native is battling cystic fibrosis.
Proceeds also will benefit Starkville-based Reclaimed Project and the area's Habitat for Humanity.
The annual football game pits Kappa Sigma against its campus neighbor, the Sigma Chi social fraternity. Kappa Sigma's personal fundraising efforts totaled $54,000 for this year's game, while members of Sigma Chi donated another $5,000.
Other major contributions included $15,000 by Deep South Pout, a local women's clothing store, and $20,000 by the family of chapter member Bowen C. Horton, a senior accounting major from Germantown, Tennessee. Both went to the Reclaimed Project.
Founded in Starkville in 2012, Reclaimed Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving orphans and the impoverished.
