Students, faculty and staff are invited to join the Social Science Research Center at Mississippi State University for Big Data Week, which may be followed on Twitter via the hashtag, #BigDataWeek.
On Monday [April 21], David Levinson of the University of Minnesota will discuss "Measuring Access" at 4 p.m. in Colvard Student Union's Fowlkes Auditorium. Levinson conducts research at the intersection of transportation engineering, geography, planning and economics, and is the editor of the Journal of Transport and Land Use. He holds the Richard P. Braun/CTS Chair in Transportation at UM.
MSU's Somya Mohanty will explore "Mining Twitter" on Tuesday [April 22] at 3 p.m. in Mitchell Memorial Library's Templeton Conference Room. Mohanty is an assistant research professor in the SSRC's Innovative Data Laboratory. He received his masterâs degree in computer science from Florida State University and his doctorate from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Mississippi State. He designs system architectures capable of handling Big Data and develops algorithms to gain insights from the data in real-time. He also contributes to the server architecture design with the use of dynamic scalable components capable of handling large data influx.
On Wednesday [April 23], Peking University's Yu Liu will discuss "Social Sensing" at 2 p.m. in the Templeton Conference Room at Mitchell Memorial Library. Liu's research interests cover several theoretical aspects in geographical information science -- spatial cognition and spatial reasoning -- and human mobility patterns. He has conducted about 10 research projects as PI or Co-PI granted by the National Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. He is currently an associate editor of Computers, Environment and Urban Systems.
Big Data Week sponsors include the Department of Sociology, College of Arts and Sciences, Bagley College of Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, the National Center for Intermodal Transportation for Economic Competitiveness, INFORMS Student Chapter and the Office of Research and Economic Development.
