STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State interior design majors are winners of more than half the 2014 awards presented in regional American Society of Interior Designers competition.

Of 41 total honors presented recently at ASID's South Central Career Day, MSU students received 22, including first-place individual wins in the creative, computer-generated renderings and retail categories.

Also, MSU swept the individual hand-rendering, hospitality and institutional design categories.

Students and faculty from Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi participated in this year's competition at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Beth Miller, who directs MSU's interior design program, said the competitive events are students' favorite part of the annual career day.

Miller, also interim associate dean of the College of Architecture, Art and Design, said the numerous winning awards are clear evidence that "student work from MSU is high quality.

"In the past few years, the MSU interior design program has dominated the competition, and we expect to continue to do so," she added.

Miller credits the MSU team's success to, in part, doing things many other academic programs do not. She cited a relatively new furniture design class as one example.

She said students may submit as many as three projects in 16 different team and individual categories. Winning projects are selected by a panel of judges on the day of the event.

In addition to the competition, Miller said students heard presentations by interior designers representing various areas of the profession.
