John Prine plays MSU Riley Center Saturday night

Folk, country, rockabilly are all well within the reach of singer/songwriter John Prine. His albums offer everything from blue collar humor, to traumatic war recollections, to social commentary. He’ll bring his easy-going stage presence and varied repertoire to the MSU Riley Center on Saturday [April 12] for an 8 p.m. A pre-show gathering will be held at 6:30 p.m., which is sponsored by Lovin’ Spoonful Catering.

Opening for Prine is Holly Williams, granddaughter and daughter of Hank Williams Sr. and Hank Williams Jr. A respected singer-songwriter in her own right, Williams released her third album, “The Highway,” in 2013.

When his musical talent was first noticed by Kris Kristofferson, Prine was a Vietnam vet and a working Chicago mailman, penning songs and playing clubs on the side. Since his debut album in 1971, the Grammy winner has quietly established himself as an esteemed songwriter, with the likes of Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash calling him out as one of their favorite musicians. He has produced more than 20 albums, his most recent one the 2011 release, “The Singing Mailman Delivers.”

Tickets are $68 and $62 at the MSU Riley Center box office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at 601-696-2200.
