Mississippi State's art department is seeking creative upper-level high school students to participate in a summer camp titled "INvision."
Taking place June 6-13, the visual arts introductory is designed for students ages 16 and older, including incoming freshmen at the university.
Since space is limited, early registration is encouraged. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and may be downloaded online at www.caad.msstate.edu/wpmu/in-vision.
Participants will learn about academic majors in the studio fields of art and design through a series of workshops focusing on papermaking, letterpress, bookmaking, graphic design, screen-printing, observational and experimental drawing, and three-dimensional design. A field trip and film series also are scheduled.
Professional sculptors, graphic designers, illustrators, interior designers, fashion designers, and landscape architects will be discussing art-related career opportunities.
In addition to attending daily classes, students will reside in campus residence halls under the supervision of camp counselors and resident advisers.
At week's end, camper-produced works will be featured at the department's Visual Arts Center Gallery on University Drive. The exhibit will be free and open to all.
The $595 camp admission includes a non-refundable $100 filing fee that must accompany each application. Due by May 30, the remaining $495 covers the cost of workshops, instruction, supplies, room and board, equipment fees, and a meal card, among others.
Lori Neuenfeldt, coordinator for the Visual Arts Center Gallery and the department's outreach programs, said the immersion program is designed to have participants leave campus feeling confident as artists.
"We expose students to all forms of art-making that they may not have ever experienced before," Neuenfeldt said. "It also is a lot of fun because students get to meet others their age from around the state and region that are creative and share a love for art."
