The Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony Orchestra will perform "German Greatness" during a March 1 concert at the city's First Baptist Church.
Free and open to all, the 7:30 p.m. program--the last of the 2013-14 season--will include the compositions of German greats Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner from the Romantic period (1810-1900).
The first half of the concert will feature Brahms' "Symphony No. 3."
Richard Human, who is both associate professor of music and MSU Philharmonia conductor, leads the program's second half that begins with the much-beloved Wagner piece, "Ride of the Valkyries."
The philharmonia, MSU's student orchestra, joins the orchestra on the famous opera excerpt.
Rounding out the evening will be Liszt's "Les Preludes." Composed by "the father of the symphonic tone poem," it is the most famous of his 13 works, and is regarded both as a "tour de force" for orchestra and one of the great Romantic creations.
