An internationally respected lighting engineer, experienced as an architect and an interior designer, will visit Mississippi State as part of the university's 2014 Interior Design Lecture Series.
Fred Oberkircher will present "The IES (Illuminating Engineering Society) and Disruption Affecting the Lighting Industry" at 1 p.m. Feb. 27.
The free, public lecture will be held in the Harrison Auditorium of the Giles Architecture Building.
Philips Color and Lighting Studio of Tupelo is sponsoring the event, in conjunction with MSU's interior design academic program -- a part of the College of Architecture, Art and Design.
Professionals attending the 90-minute presentation may earn 1.5 continuing education units, or CEUs, from IES, American Institute of Architects or National Council on Qualifications for Lighting Professions.
Topics will include:
--Identifying the key changes in IES' search to identify light;
--Comparing significant metrics used;
--Analyzing the current state of evolving disruptive technology; and
--Predicting the effects of these disruptions to the future of light.
A certified lighting practitioner, Oberkircher is a former IES president and was named an IES Fellow in 2006. He is an associate professor emeritus at Texas Christian University who received bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture from Pennsylvania State University.
In addition to membership in the International Association of Lighting Designers, he serves on the board of directors of the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education, which supports postsecondary study of lighting and design.
