Titans coach Herman Boone to 'remember' at MSU

The high school coach portrayed in the much-praised film "Remember the Titans" will speak Tuesday [Nov. 19] at Mississippi State.

Coach Herman Boone--played by acclaimed actor Denzel Washington in the 2000 movie--gained national notoriety for accomplishments on and off the field in leading the desegregation of his Virginia school's football team during the 1970s,

Free and open to all, his 5:30 p.m. university address takes place in the Colvard Student Union's Foster Ballroom. In addition to his remarks, the program will include a screening of the movie and a question-and-answer period.

Directed by Boaz Yakin from a screenplay written by Gregory Allen Howard, "Titans" follows Boone as he took control of a racially divided football team in Alexandria and helped them overcome their differences. For more, visit www.imdb.com/title/tt0210945/.

"We were looking to combine an inspirational speech with a discussion of racial issues because both are important topics," said Michael Hogan, president of the sponsoring Student Association. "We also choose Coach Boone because we feel the movie still is impactful."
