A veteran member of the Mississippi State music department faculty will give a piano recital Friday [Nov. 8] in memory of a Starkville piano teacher who was president of the Golden Triangle Music Forum.
Professor Rosangela Yazbec Sebba will perform in Giles Hall's Harrison Auditorium on the university campus. The 7:30 p.m. concert is free and open to all.
The evening will be dedicated to the memory of Ricki Prewitt, who led the local affiliate of Mississippi Music Teachers Association and Music Teachers National Association. She died last month.
The program will include three sonatas for piano by Ludwig van Beethoven, along with three letters read aloud by Ryan Ross, MSU assistant professor of music history. Taken from "Beethoven Letters, Journals and Conversations," (Thames and Hudson, 1992), the letters will serve to open each sonata.
Sebba said each sonata represents a different period in Beethoven's life.
Sonata Op. 2 No. 1, the first of the 32, belongs to his first period and represents the composer's efforts to master the predominant classical language of the period. It is dedicated to his teacher, Joseph Haydn.
Sonata Op. 79 is the shortest of the group and belongs to Beethoven's middle period when he had full control of form, harmony and compositional style. Sonata Op. 110, the central in the group of the last three, is dedicated to Archduke Rudolph, Beethoven's student and accomplished pianist.
In addition to recitals, Sebba long has led master classes and lectures in the United States, her native Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, Costa Rica, England and Spain. As a sought-after chamber musician, the University of Southern Mississippi doctoral graduate has accompanied master classes and concerts of such artists as Simon Estes, Wynton Marsalis, The Emerson String Quartet, Joseph Robinson and Leontyne Price.
She is a member of the board of the Mississippi Music Teachers Association and serves as its vice president for collegiate and national competitions. She also is included in the Mississippi Arts Commission Artist Roster.
