STARKVILLE, Miss.--Such Sweete Melodie, an ensemble of Baroque specialists committed to historically informed performances of the 17th and 18th centuries, brings its special sound next week to downtown Starkville.

The Midwest-based group will perform songs and sonatas during a Tuesday [Nov. 5] concert at First Baptist Church, 106 East Lampkin St.

Free and open to all, the 6 p.m. program is sponsored by Mississippi State University's music department, with funding from a Criss Trust Grant.

The ensemble of six artists from around the country will present several musical stylings with feature instruments that include the violone, theorbo, lute, and virginal. Emphasis will be given to the Renaissance and Baroque eras through works by such well-known composers as Claudio Montverdi and John Dowland.

In addition to being seasoned performers, the members are accomplished musical scholars. On campus, they will take time to lead music department master classes, as well as speak and perform at a Shackouls Honors College forum.
