STARKVILLE, Miss.--The Jackson-based Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will present a Sunset Symphony April 5 at the Mississippi State University Amphitheater.
Blankets, chairs and picnics are encouraged for the free 7 p.m. event. In case of rain, the campus concert will relocate to the McComas Hall main auditorium.
"We're very excited about this performance," said Michael Beattie, MSO executive director. "It is important to us to carry out the true meaning of our name by going to as many places in the state as we can."
Directed by Crafton Beck, the 65 professional musicians will feature a selection of light classics--recognizable and fun music--during the program's first half.
The second half will feature a variety of pops music sets, including selections from Richard Rogers' "The King and I," James Bond movie themes and John Philip Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever."
As the state's largest professional performing arts organization, the MSO performs for more than 75,000 Mississippians annually at more than 120 concerts. Additionally, the organization supports three youth orchestras and an education program with more than 500 students receiving daily instruction in violin, viola and cello.
