STARKVILLE, Miss.--More than 500 men are registered for a Mississippi State event next week that invites them to leave their comfort zones to consider issues from a woman's perspective.
Taking place 4-6 p.m. Tuesday [March 5], the "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" experience will have the male participants put on high heels and take a walk around the Junction. Open to all, the annual university event is part of an international campaign designed to raise awareness and help prevent rape, sexual assault and other forms of gender violence.
An opening presentation at 4 p.m. will, among other things, welcome walkers to participate at any point during the two-hour period.
The organization's website describes Walk a Mile as "a playful opportunity for men to raise awareness in their community about the serious causes, effects and remediations to sexualized violence," while offering abundant opportunities to get people talking about a topic that is often a difficult subject to broach.
Leah Pylate, assistant director of health education and wellness and sexual assault with MSU Health Services, added, "We're asking men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes to show their support for ending violence against women."
