Mississippi State art students recently swept the competition at a state-wide arts contest.
At the Mississippi Collegiate Arts Competition earlier this month, 1,052 entries from 10 universities were submitted for judging. Only 188 pieces were selected by juror Sarah Marshall, professor of art at the University of Alabama, to be displayed at the Arts Center of Mississippi. Of those, 188 pieces, 66 were works by MSU students.
MSU students also won five awards, more than any other school.
The MSU winners include:
--Sarah G. Kilpatrick of Mathiston, Juror's Purchase Award in sculpture;
--Marion E. Morrow of Columbus, Award of Excellence in graphic design;
--Whitten Sabbatini of Clinton, Award of Excellence in photography;
--Charlotte E. Smith of Brandon, Best in Show for her sculpture "A Summer Night;" and
--Katja Walter of Starkville, Award of Excellence in computer imagery.
The MCAC is a juried exhibition featuring the work of student artists enrolled in four-year colleges and universities. It is designed to showcase the high quality of visual arts education taking place in Mississippi higher education.
