STARKVILLE, Miss.--The Mississippi State University Department of Sociology will celebrate its doctoral program's 50th anniversary Feb. 28-March 1.

The series of events and celebrations for alumni of the program also marks the 66th anniversary of the department. Former graduates will eat lunch with current doctoral students, tour campus and attend a reception and banquet during the two-day event.

The sociology department was created in 1947, with the doctoral program established in 1963, allowing students more advanced training. Since then, the department has awarded 188 doctoral degrees. Graduates have gone to careers in academia, government, non-profit and other fields.

With an initial focus on rural sociology, today professors and students in the department specialize in a number of fields, including criminology, demography and social stratification. The program emphasizes research method and theory while accommodating individual student interests.
