STARKVILLE, Miss.--Legislation creating the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Mississippi--now Mississippi State--was signed Feb. 28, 1878.

To commemorate the land-grant university's founding 135 years ago, a Thursday [Feb. 28] birthday party organized by the MSU Alumni Association will take place 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Junction.

The campus celebration is free and open to all. Complimentary hamburgers, chips, soft drinks, MSU ice cream and birthday cake will be served, while supplies last.

Free birthday T-shirts also will be tossed from the stage where Music Maker Productions is sponsoring live entertainment by local band Big Poppa Strang.

"This is the eighth year for the MSU Alumni Association to host a party to celebrate our founding," said Jimmy Abraham, the association's executive director. "It's a great way to bring together students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends on this very special occasion."

Abraham, also associate vice president for development and alumni, said the party has no formal program, making it easy for participants to drop by as their schedules permit.

"Please plan to join us Thursday and help us celebrate our birthday," Abraham said.
