STARKVILLE, Miss.--The Starkville/Mississippi State University Symphony Orchestra will perform its first 2013 winter concert Jan. 12 at the downtown First Baptist Church.

Titled "All That Jazz," the free 7:30 p.m. program includes selections by American and French composers, with the first half devoted to works by Darius Milhaud and Aaron Copland.

The program's second half opens with three classic big-band tunes performed by the SSO Big Band under the leadership of associate professor Clifton Taylor, who also is associate director of MSU Bands. The Taylor-led group will showcase the talents of MSU woodwinds instructor Sheri Falcone, the orchestra's principal clarinetist, and Starkville Public Schools band director Doug Thomas on the tenor saxophone.

Concluding the evening will be George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" as it first was performed in the original theater orchestra version by the composer and the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. Music professor Jackie Edwards-Henry will be featured as piano soloist.
