Former MSU Football Coach Darrell Royal dead at 88

Former Mississippi State football coach and College Football Hall of Famer Darrell Royal has died. He was 88.

From 1957-76, Royal became a legendary coach for the Texas Longhorns, whose stadium carries his name, and was that university’s all-time winningest coach, with two national championships in 1963 and 1969, 10 Cotton Bowl championships, and 11 SWC titles.

In 23 years as a head coach, he never had a losing season. During both his 1954 and 1955 seasons at MSU, he went 6-4 overall each year. Royal believed in a strong running game, and in 1968, he installed the wishbone, which continues today as a common offensive formation.
