STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State University's Department of Music will present "A Russian Recital" Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Robert and Freda Harrison Auditorium in Giles Hall on campus.
College of Education music professor Rosangela Yazbec Sebba will perform three of the "Ten Piano Etudes Op. 15" by Sergei Eduardovich Bortkiewicz and "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky. Mussorgsky wrote "Pictures at an Exhibition" as a way of describing paintings by his friend Victor Hartmann, whose works will be displayed during the free recital.
Six of the paintings in the collection are missing, but senior art students in professor Brent Funderburk's watercolor class created original works for the event: Jason Chapman, of Jackson; Jennifer Lee, of Summerdale, Ala.; and Stormi Steele, of DeKalb.
"This concert is a joint effort," Sebba said. "'Pictures at an Exhibition' was written to reflect the paintings; now we will have students who will paint influenced by the music â" the reverse. I am really excited about this."
Music history professor Ryan Ross wrote the program notes for the recital.
