STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State will hold a launch event Thursday [Aug. 25] for the university's new Zipcar car-sharing program.
The 10:30 a.m. public program takes place in front of the Colvard Student Union on Lee Blvd.
MSU students, faculty and staff members 18 years of age and older may register for the transportation option available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The program also is open to members of the local community ages 21 and over.
Sign-up and other information is available at www.zipcar.com/msstate.
All participating MSU members will have a $35 annual fee, with rates starting from $8 per hour or $66 per day. Gas, insurance, reserved parking spots, up to 180 miles of driving per day, and roadside assistance are included in the hourly and daily rates. Cars may be reserved for as little as an hour or for up to multiple days of usage.
Student Association President Rhett Hobart of Greenville said the program should benefit students by allowing easy access to an inexpensive and reliable car-sharing program.
"It also serves as a great benefit for those students without vehicles, especially our international community," Hobart said.
Amy Tuck, executive director of campus operations, will join Hobart at the launch program. Zipcar Inc. representatives also will be on campus Thursday and early Friday to demonstrate the program and provide assistance in registration.
