STARKVILLE, Miss.--For the sixth consecutive year, Mississippi State alumni chapters around the country will hold late-summer send-off parties for local students attending the university for the first time.

Co-sponsored by the MSU Alumni Association and Office of Admissions and Scholarships, this year's events take place between July 23 and Aug. 6. In addition to the students' parents and friends, they involve the active participation of prospective students and alumni chapter members.

"These parties are designed to encourage excitement and enthusiasm for incoming freshmen and transfer students for our 133-year-old land grant institution," said Jimmy Abraham, the alumni association's executive director.

More than 50 chapters throughout the state--and from North Carolina to Texas, Illinois to Florida--have scheduled 2011 "send-offs." To view the schedule, click here.

"Last year, we had remarkable support from our chapters for these special events," said Abraham, also associate vice president for development. "This year, we anticipate them being even bigger and better."

During each gathering, representatives of admissions and scholarships, alumni association, and other campus offices will be on hand to answer specific questions regarding university life. Various faculty or staff members also will be in attendance.
