STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Mississippi State junior will spend the fall semester studying at the University of San Ignacio De Loyola in Lima, Peru.
Sasha Liddell of Byram has been awarded a $3,000 scholarship from U.S. State Department's Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. The award defrays eligible study-abroad costs, including program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance, and international airfare.
Liddell, an accounting and business administration/international business double-major, is the daughter of Eileen and John Liddell of Byram. A Dean's List Scholar, she will be taking 18 credit hours at the Lima institution while living with a host-family in the city.
"Being able to spend a full semester studying in Peru is a great opportunity" she said. "When looking for a place to study, I wanted someplace where I could become a part of the community by speaking Spanish on a daily basis while interacting with my peers and immersing myself in the full cultural experience.
"Being able to study and live in Lima will give me that opportunity," she added.
Part of the federal Institute of International Education, the Gilman Scholarship Program offers grants to undergraduate students from a diverse range of colleges and universities to pursue academic studies abroad.
Participants are chosen through a competitive process based a variety of criteria, including, among others, a desire to study in non-traditional countries outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
