Spirit of State Awards recognize 22 for outstanding involvement

Nearly two dozen Mississippi State students are receiving the university's premier student recognition for exceptional personal contributions to campus life.

Now in its sixth year, the Spirit of State Awards formally honor those who have made a positive impact on peers and the broader campus community through organizational involvements, services to the institution and personal actions promoting school spirit and tradition.

Those selected have been nominated either by faculty and staff members or fellow students.

The 2011 spring list of 22 inductees includes (by hometown):

GREENWOOD--Junior Meredith K. Buford, a kinesiology major and daughter of Richard and Terri Kimmel;

CLARKSDALE--Senior Pricilla A. Li, a biochemistry major and daughter of Tony and Monica Li.

CLINTON--Hannah Rachel Cardin, an English and foreign language double-major and daughter of Tommie and Susan Cardin; and Halston R. Hales, an industrial and systems engineering major and son of George and Donna Hales. Both are seniors.

COLUMBIA--Senior Phillip A. "Drew" Weiskopf, a risk management, insurance and financial planning major and son of William and Janet Weiskopf.

DURAND, ILL.--Rebecca S. "Becca" Flores, a second-year doctoral student in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

MADISON--Senior Elizabeth Pellegrine, a social work and sociology double-major and daughter of James Pellegrine of Brandon and Tammy Thornton of Canton; and Nicole Smylie, a graduate student in public policy and administration and daughter of Robert and Nancy Smylie.

MATTHEWS, N.C.--Senior Evan O'Donnell, a wildlife science major and son of Evan and Therese O'Donnell.

MERIDIAN--Senior Stephanie L. Maxwell, an elementary education major at the Meridian campus.

NEW ALBANY--Senior Anne Elise Parks, a broadcast meteorology major and daughter of William and Beth Parks.

PHILADELPHIA--Lauren M. McKee, a graduate student in business administration and daughter of Greg and Linda McKee.

RAYMOND--Senior Kimberly R. "Kim" Watson, a history and foreign languages double-major and daughter of Leonard Watson of Jackson [39213] and Betty Watson of Raymond.

RIDGELAND--Senior Sarah J. Stone, a communication major and daughter of William and Gayla Stone.

SALLIS--Senior Jamhal Kelly, a biochemistry major.

SAUCIER--Junior William M. "Bill" Gilbert, a biochemistry major and son of William and Melissa Gilbert.

SENECA, Kan.--Sara J. Heiman, a graduate student in counselor education.

SHANNON--Brooke B. Collins, a graduate student in counselor education and daughter of William Collins.

STARKVILLE--Sophomore Nibeer Dewan, an industrial and systems engineering major and son of Sailendra and Kumkum Dewan of Kolkata, India; and junior Maureen Hughes, an accounting and communication double-major and daughter of Ben and Lorraine Hughes.

VICKSBURG--Senior Ingrid Gonzalez, an architecture major and daughter of Carlos and Marisol Gonzalez.
