A whirlwind of blues, good-time rhythm, jazz and other American sounds entertain on Thursday [April 14] when Chris Brubeck's Triple Play closes out Mississippi State's 2010-2011 Lyceum Series.
The trio of critically acclaimed performers with nearly 40 years of experience each will bring sounds performed recently at the Monterey Jazz Festival in San Francisco, as well as in concert halls, clubs and other venues throughout the country.
The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Hall's Bettersworth Auditorium. General admission tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for senior citizens and MSU faculty and staff; and $8 for children.
With the release of their first album in 2000, "Triple Play Live," Brubeck, Peter Madcat Ruth and Joel Brown created a distinct level of joy, virtuosity and American spirit. Their performances include folk, blues, jazz and classical music.
Jackie Mullen, assistant director of the Campus Activities Board, said the group's popular performance in a previous Lyceum event led to its return campus visit.
"Chris Brubeck's Triple Play appeals to a wide audience because of their strong appeal to folk, blues, jazz and classical music," said Mullen. "I hope everyone will take advantage of listening to some great live music in this historic Bettersworth Auditorium."
Playing an arsenal of instruments that include the harmonica, guitars, jaw harp, bass trombone, piano, and electric bass, Triple Play's sounds have been described by All Music Guide as something that should be "investigated by anyone who enjoys great American music."
Paul deBarros, music writer for the Seattle Times and Downbeat magazine, described the trio's repertoire as "what jazz always was and always should be about: good-time rhythm, unbridled joy and the sweet release but bittersweet aftertaste of the blues."
