MEDIA ADVISORY: Model Security Council this week

Contact: Sammy McDavid

As it has during the spring semester for more than three decades, the Mississippi Model Security Council meets this week at Mississippi State.

Students from nearly a dozen Mississippi public and private high schools--and one from Tennessee--will be at the university Thursday-Saturday (Feb. 24-26).

Most activities take place at the Colvard Student Union. "Sustainable Development of Natural Resources" is this year's focus.

Organized since 1979 by the department of political science and public administration, MMSC is an academic simulation of the United Nations Security Council. Part of a national program, its goal is to educate participants about international relations, public responsibility, effective communication, and globalization, among other areas.

Feisal Amin Rasoul Istrabadi, a professor at Indiana University's Maurer School of Law and principal legal drafter of Iraq's interim constitution, will be this year's keynote speaker. He was Iraq' permanent representative to the United Nations 2004-07. (See www.chloregy.com/home/politics-a-society/118158-feisal-amin-al-istrabadi....)

Schools represented include Brandon, DeSoto Central, Franklin County, Jackson Preparatory, Madison Central, Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science in Columbus, Newton County, Northwest Rankin, Pillow Academy in Greenwood, St. Benedict at Auburndale in Cordova, Tenn., and Starkville.

Assistant professor Brian Shoup and doctoral student Tonya T. Neaves are MMSC coordinators. For a complete schedule and more information, contact them at 662-325-2711.
