STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Mississippi State University economics professor is being honored for his contributions to the field by a regional professional organization.
Paul W. Grimes, also an associate dean for instruction and operations in the College of Business, received the Kenneth G. Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award by the Southern Economic Association during its annual conference in Atlanta, Ga.
Based in Chattanooga, Tenn., the SEA is one of the oldest regional economics associations in the United States, dating to 1928, with a goal of furthering education of scholars and the public in economic affairs. The organization publishes The Southern Economic Journal, the eighth oldest American scholarly journal in this field.
Grimes has written extensively on economics education and currently serves as associate editor of The Journal of Economic Education. He also is past president of the National Association of Economic Educators and recipient of the organization's Henry H. Villard Research Award. Additionally, Grimes directs the Center for Economic Education and Financial Literacy at MSU.
Through his work with the Mississippi Council on Economic Education, Grimes trains elementary and secondary school teachers. Grimes has coordinated summer programs that bring at-risk high school students to MSU in preparation for college, emphasizing planning and finances.
Grimes has a bachelor's and master's degree from Pittsburg State University and a doctorate from Oklahoma State University, each in economics.
