Campbell named national SVA president

STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State University research associate Michael Campbell is the new president of the Student Veterans of America, the nation's leading advocacy group for student veterans.

Campbell, a research coordinator for the department of entomology, was selected to the one-year post at the organization's national conference held at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

"I am looking forward to serving my fellow student veterans in this position, and I promise to work diligently on their behalf," Campbell said.

A 2009 MSU graduate, Campbell served in the Army 2000-04 and is a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. He earned an associate of arts degree from East Oklahoma State. In 2007, after learning of the university's G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Center for America's Veterans, he transferred to Mississippi State, earning his bachelor's degree in forest management,.

In 2008, he was an integral part of the group that constructed the bylaws and constitution founding the SVA.

Campbell has served as president of the MSU SVA chapter as well as state director prior to being named to the top post.

The SVA is a nonprofit organization with more than 20,000 members in 327 university chapters across America. Its goal is to help veterans successfully transition from combat to the classroom by developing student veteran groups on campuses to create a network of resources, ideas, and support; developing programs and policies that help them transition to the classroom; centralizing the critical resources that they need to graduate; and advocating on behalf of them at the state and national levels.
