STARKVILLE, Miss.--Fulbright ambassador and Washington State University professor Mushtaq Memon will present two lectures on international education when Mississippi State observes International Education Week Nov. 13-19.

On Nov. 15, Memon will speak to faculty and staff about Fulbright opportunities from 2-4 p.m. in Colvard Student Union, Room 329, followed by a campus-wide lecture titled "International Education: Striving for a Sustainable Future" at 6 p.m. in McCool Hall's Taylor Auditorium.

The week will close with a Borderless Hosts orientation session from 3-6 p.m. in Colvard Student Union Fowlkes Auditorium. Organization representatives will have information available for individuals interested in hosting international students for a semester. Memon received his veterinary education in Pakistan, holds a doctorate from the University of Minnesota, and conducted his veterinary residency training at the University of Illinois.

He is the author of more than 130 publications in scientific journals and book chapters and has taught internationally as a visiting professor or a consultant to more than 20 countries, including Argentina, Armenia, Chile, Georgia, Iran, Italy, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Thailand, and Uruguay.

International Education Week was launched in 2000 by the U.S. Education and State departments. Taking place the week prior to the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, it now is observed in more than 100 countries. At MSU, activities are sponsored by the university's Richard Holmes Cultural Diversity Center and are designed to help campus and community populations develop a broader understanding and appreciation of world cultures and languages, among other goals.

The week is co-sponsored by the Office of International Program Development, Hispanic Student Association, Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers, College of Veterinary Medicine, and Barnes and Noble Bookstore at Mississippi State.

Other events scheduled as part of International Education Week include:

--Nov. 13--International Soccer Tournament, Starkville Sportsplex, 2:30-5 p.m.;

--Nov. 14--Wallyball Tournament, Sanderson Center, 1-9 p.m.;

--Nov. 16--Latin Night, including traditional Latin dinner, cultural program, and dances, Colvard Student Union, Bill Foster Ballroom, 6-9 p.m.;

--Nov. 17--Panel on Religions, Colvard Student Union, Bill Foster Ballroom, 3-5 p.m.;

--Nov. 18--African Music on the Drill Field, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
