STARKVILLE, Miss.--The Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony opens its 42nd season Sept. 21 [Tuesday] with its brass quintet performing during "Pops on the Plaza."
The free, 6 p.m. event is annually held at Cadence Bank plaza in downtown Starkville on the corner of Main and Jackson streets. Seating will be provided.
Including a variety of musical genres, the concert will feature gospel, blues and show tunes, three Beatles' pieces, an Armed Forces medley, and a selection by John Cheetham titled "Scherzo." Retired from Missouri University, Cheetham has written more than five dozen works for solo instruments, small ensembles, concert bands, orchestras and choruses, with "Scherzo" as the most recognizable and popular for brass quintet.
Michael Brown, head of MSU's music department, is the symphony's director and also plays second trumpet for the quintet.
Other quintet members, also MSU faculty members, are Michael Huff, first trumpet; John McGuire, horn; Richard Human, trombone; and Patrick Hinton, tuba.
Rain location for the event is the Greensboro Center on Greensboro Street. Sponsors are Metrocast cable company and the Mississippi Arts Commission.
