STARKVILLE, Miss.--The world's largest engineering honor society has recognized a Mississippi State University professor for her student mentoring efforts.
Tau Beta Pi recently announced Donna S. Reese, professor and interim head of the university's department of computer science and engineering, is the recipient of the 2010 McDonald Mentor Award.
Reese will be honored Oct. 9 at the organization's 105th annual convention in King of Prussia, Penn. Tau Beta Pi president Larry A. Simonson will present the MSU faculty member with an engraved medallion, along with two $1,000 checks, one to Reese and another to the MSU chapter of the engineering honor society.
"Dr. Reese was recognized for her devotion to teaching, mentoring, and making a difference in the lives of many students," Simonson said. "Her work ethic in encouraging students to reach their full potential has elevated her standing to that of a role model for students, faculty and advisory peers."
Reese received her bachelor's degree in computer science from Louisiana Tech University and master's and doctoral degrees in computer science from Texas A&M University. She joined MSU's faculty in 1989, and also later serving as associate dean at the Bagley College of Engineering for five years. Reese was awarded the outstanding faculty adviser award in 2004 from the National Academic Advising Association and was named an MSU Grisham Master Teacher.
Headquartered in Knoxville, Tenn., the engineering society boasts more than 516,000 members since its founding in 1885. It has more than 200 active collegiate chapters and 18 active
alumnus chapters throughout the United States.
Established in 2005 by Marion and Capers W. McDonald and the organization, the McDonald Mentor Award recognizes engineering educators or professionals in industry, government or service organizations who have shown concern for individuals, supported an environment for developing talents and earned respect and recognition for contributions in his or her field and to the greater community.
Sarah Rajala, dean of MSU's Bagley College of Engineering, described Reese as an outstanding role-model and mentor.
"She is committed to ensuring the success of all our students and faculty," Rajala said. "The Tau Beta Pi McDonald Mentor Award is a well-deserved recognition for Dr. Reese and a tremendous honor for both her and the college."
