STARKVILLE, Miss.--Preparing to leave for college can be hectic and confusing for students and parents, and getting the new student moved can be overwhelming.
The associate director for student housing at Mississippi State University says with literally thousands of students moving into campus housing, move-in day often appears to be little more than controlled chaos. However, with a little planning, parents can help ease the transition.
MSU's Lari Wright advises keeping a few tips in mind to minimize moving stress:
- Prepare for the heat. August typically is Mississippi's hottest month. Be prepared by wearing comfortable, cool clothes and shoes;
- Think light. When possible, pack belongings in easy-to-carry containers and bring lightweight hand trucks and wheeled luggage carriers;
- Know your room number. You cut down unloading zone time and confusion if you know exactly where you're going. At MSU, move-in volunteers label boxes with the appropriate room number, so speed up the process by being prepared.
- Stick to the basics. You can always bring more accessories later. For the first day of moving, minimize stress by deciding how to arrange furniture and planning what you'll need to add.
