STARKVILLE, Miss.--An award-winning Mississippi State staff member is a newly elected regional leader of a national academic advising organization.
Rachel L. Singleton of Starkville recently was selected by her peers as chair of the Southeast Region, National Academic Advising Association. She has served as academic coordinator for the university's College of Forest Resources since 1998.
Singleton, who earlier held a similar position in the College of Business, was honored in 2008 with NACADA's Outstanding Advising Award.
Chartered in 1979 and usually referred to by its acronym, NACADA has a total membership of more than 10,000. It represents faculty members, professional advisers like Singleton, administrators, counselors, and others in academic and student affairs who work daily to serve the intellectual, personal and vocational needs of students.
In addition to Mississippi, the organization's Southeast, or Region 4, includes the states of Alabama, Florida and Georgia, as well as the Caribbean region and island of Puerto Rico.
Singleton, who officially assumes her new position in October, holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi. She also has served as an adjunct faculty member in marketing and continuing education, as well as a College of Forest Resources guest lecturer.
