STARKVILLE, Miss.--A new gallery featuring art unlike any other in the state opens Sunday [April 18] at Mississippi State.
From 1-3 p.m., a public reception for the new Martha Lipsey Art Gallery will take place at the university's T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability (www.tkmartin.msstate.edu).
Named for the late Yazoo City native who died earlier this year, the gallery includes works by participants in the center's EXPRESS Yourself program. The title is an acronym for EXperiencing Painting as Recreation and Express the Spirit.
Lipsey was a long-time member of the program that uses the techniques of Artistic Realization Technologies to provide a means for persons with the most severe disabilities to express themselves through art.
"For our artists, being able to express themselves through their art is one of the most significant parts of their lives," said center director Janie Cirlot-New. "Our new Martha Lipsey Art Gallery will be the perfect venue for sharing them with the world."
Many of the pieces on display are available for purchase and may be viewed in advance at www.tkmartin.msstate.edu/projects/bass.php, she added.
