STARKVILLE, Miss.--Two days of panel discussions, individual presentations and breakout sessions at Mississippi State next week will address the topic "Creating the New Economy."
For the third consecutive year, the university's Leadership Summit is being sponsored Tuesday and Wednesday [Sept. 29 and 30] by the College of Business, in collaboration with the Division of Academic Outreach and Continuing Education. Nationally and regionally recognized leaders in business, government, education, and economics will be among the speakers. (Complete information at www.summit.msstate.edu.)
A number of sessions during the special-issues event are open to the general public. They include:
Tuesday
--10 a.m., "MSU Green Bicycle Tour." Organized by the Environmental Collaborative Office and beginning at the Hunter Henry Center on the western edge of campus, the tour on maroon-and-white cruisers debuted last year will help introduce the 131-year-old land-grant institution's efforts to become more eco-friendly. A $10 participation fee includes lunch.
--6 p.m., keynote address titled "All's Fair: Love, War and Politics" by political consultants Mary Matalin and James Carville of New Orleans, La. Tickets for their presentations in Lee Hall's Bettersworth Auditorium are $20 each (plus a handling fee), and will be available for pick-up that day. A limited number of tickets for the Carville/Matalin lecture also are available for MSU students and employees at no charge, but they also must register at the above link.
Carville, chief architect of Democrat Bill Clinton's election as the 44th president, is married to Matalin, former assistant to Republican President George W. Bush and counselor to Vice President Dick Cheney. Authors of the New York Times' best-seller "All's Fair: Love, War, and Running for President," both today also are consultants and commentators.
Wednesday
--An 11:15 a.m. book signing with Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream. His books include "The Inside Scoop" and "The Double Dip: Lead with Your Values and Make Money Too."
--A 2:30-4:30 p.m. ice cream social at the Junction titled "An Afternoon of Social Responsibility, Radical Business Philosophy, and Free Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream." A longtime advocate of "values-led" and socially conscious management, Greenfield and business partner Ben Cohen have turned their business into a $300 million ice cream empire.
