STARKVILLE, Miss.--A senior Mississippi State professor is among 10 Mississippians whose work is being featured in the Mississippi Museum of Art's 2009 Mississippi Invitational.

Marita Gootee, a member of the university faculty since 1986, recently was selected from more than 100 artists for inclusion in the seventh installation of the biennial exhibition of contemporary visual art.

Featured through Nov. 29, the display includes Gootee's five contemporary still-life photographs created with a pinhole camera and Polaroid 8x10 film.

"Being selected as one of the more significant contemporary artists Mississippi is a very high honor, especially when you consider the number of fabulous artists we have here," she said.

"Being in that league is pretty exciting," added the Indiana State University fine arts graduate and veteran photography teacher whose works long have been chosen for state and national exhibitions.

Launched in 1997, the Mississippi Invitational is sponsored by the Hiatt-Ingram Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson/Jane and Wood Hiatt, with additional support of Balch & Bingham LLP and Fischer Galleries.

The museum is located in downtown Jackson at the corner of Lamar and Court streets. For more information about its Mississippi Invitational and other events, visit www.msmuseumart.org.
