STARKVILLE, Miss.--The head of Mississippi State's music department and an Atlanta choirmaster are joining for a Sept. 10 benefit to aid Haitian students.
Michael Brown, also a professor in the university department, and John Coble of Covenant Presbyterian Church in the Buckhead community, will present an organ and trumpet recital at Starkville's First United Methodist Church. Their program begins at 7:30 p.m.
Admission is free, but persons attending are requested to bring donations of used instruments, reeds, mouthpieces, valve and key oils, music stands, and related equipment. Cash gifts also will be accepted.
Contributions will support the band program at Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church and School on La Gonave, a satellite island located northwest of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.
Haiti, one of the world's most impoverished countries, occupies the western third of the major Caribbean island of Hispaniola.
Brown has many years of professional orchestral and ensemble experience. In addition to MSU administrative duties, the University of Georgia doctoral graduate currently is music director for the Starkville Symphony.
Coble, also Covenant Presbyterian's organist, holds a doctorate in organ performance from Indiana University. He and Brown have performed as a professional duo for the past 15 years.
