There are a few open seats left for professional development for a one-credit special topics course, "Safety in the Life Science Research Laboratory."
The fall 2009 semester course is sponsored by the Office for Regulatory Compliance-Safety Division, in conjunction with the department of biochemistry and molecular biology. The course is designed to familiarize undergraduate and graduate students working in life sciences and/or biomedical research laboratories with basic laboratory safety.
Class will meet Mondays, 2-2:50 p.m.
The first half of the hands-on course will focus on general lab safety, including fire safety, chemical handling and storage, hazardous waste management, and radiological safety. The second half will cover basic biological safety, including risk assessment, methods of containment, biohazardous waste management, and emergency response.
Seats are still open for anyone interested in professional development, including faculty and staff members, post-doctoral researchers and research associates.
