STARKVILLE, Miss.--The Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony Orchestra launches its 2009 season Jan. 10 by performing the works of Franz Joseph Haydn.
The free 7:30 p.m. program in Lee Hall auditorium will begin with the "Overture in D" and "Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 1" featuring MSU music department strings instructor Simona Barbu.
The evening concludes with the Austrian composer's 104th and final symphony, also known as "The London Symphony."
The teacher of Mozart and Beethoven, Haydn (1732-1809) is considered the first great master of the string quartet.
