STARKVILLE, Miss.--Jackie Edwards-Henry's Nov. 16 concert of music for harpsichord is part of Mississippi State's 2008-09 Lyceum Faculty Chamber Series.
The free public program begins at 2:30 p.m. at Starkville's St. Joseph Catholic Church on University Drive.
Edwards-Henry is a veteran member of the university's music department faculty who also serves as a pianist for the church. She will be joined for the concert by Michael Bowman on violin; Lana Johns, flute; Elaine Peterson, bassoon; Joseph Mulrooney, mandolin; and Robert Damm, percussion.
Most of their selections date from classical music's Baroque Era (1685-1750) and originally were written for the distinctive instrument whose keys are plucked rather than struck, as with the piano. Scarlatti, J.S. Bach, Quantz, and Vivaldi are composers of these works.
Additionally, the faculty program will include a set of three English dance pieces from approximately the same historical period, as well as two contemporary selections arranged for harpsichord and violin by Edwards. The latter include "Farewell to Stromness" by Peter Maxwell Davies and Jay Ungar's popular "Ashokan Farewell" that gained wide exposure through the public television series "The Civil War: A Film by Ken Burns."
