STARKVILLE, Miss.--The 2008-09 Mississippi State University Faculty Chamber Series officially kicks off Oct. 20 with a concert featuring piano, flute, cello, and clarinet.
To begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall, the program is part of the annual campus Lyceum Series. General admission tickets are $5. MSU students are admitted free with valid identification.
Karen Murphy, piano instructor and music department accompanist, will present "From European Salons to American Barns." Compositions of Beethoven, Larsen, Poulenc, and Teml will be featured.
Joining Murphy will be departmental colleagues Lana Johns on flute, Simona Barbu on cello and Sheri Falcone on clarinet.
Murphy holds degrees from Indiana and Arizona State universities, as well as the University of Minnesota. She has performed in venues throughout the United States, Canada, France, and Spain.
Johns, a professor, completed degrees in flute performance from University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Florida State University. As both a soloist and member of several professional duos, she has made appearances in Canada, Europe and South America. In the U.S., she has played at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Carnegie Hall.
Prior to debuting as a soloist in 1999, Barbu was a member of the leading quartet at the Conservatory of Timisoara in her native Romania. In addition to the conservatory, the adjunct instructor of strings also holds degrees from the University of Memphis, Southern Methodist and Lynn universities.
Falcone, instructor of clarinet and saxophone, has been a featured clinician, conductor, adjudicator, and soloist at contests and festivals in Delaware, Mississippi, New York, South Carolina, and Texas. She holds multiple degrees from Syracuse University.
