MSU guest speaker to present world view of civil wars

STARKVILLE, Miss.--"Civil War from Rome to Iraq" will be a Harvard University historian's topic during a Thursday [Sept. 11] public program at Mississippi State.

David Armitage's presentation, whose subtitle is "A History of Ideas," begins at 4 p.m. in Ballroom M of the Colvard Student Union.

Armitage is the first guest for the 2008-09 Distinguished Speaker Series sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences and its Institute for the Humanities.

A native of Great Britain and graduate of Cambridge and Princeton universities, he holds Harvard's Lloyd C. Blankfein Professorship in History.

Among the nine books he has written are "The Ideological Origins of the British Empire," which won the Longman/History Today Book of the Year Award, and "The Declaration of Independence: A Global History," a Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year.
