STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State's contributions in fine-tuning a widely used education evaluation software program are gaining international visibility.

Julie Fulgham, interim director of the university's institutional research office, travels next month to Germany. She is an invited keynote speaker for a conference in Mainz convened by EvaSys, whose evaluation software is used by many German universities, institutions and industries. At the September gathering on the campus of Johannes Gutenberg University, Fulgham joins more than 130 representatives of academic and medical institutions in Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

Fulgham, also a College of Business and Industry lecturer, will discuss Class Climate, a program used by MSU for course evaluation and data collection projects. Developed in Germany, the software is distributed in the U.S. by the California-based Scantron Corp.

"This is wonderful exposure for Mississippi State, because our experience with the Class Climate software has led to many enhancements of the product," explained Fulgham, a 26-year university employee.

Working with the Robert Holland Faculty Senate, MSU's institutional research staff has used the software to develop a faculty-driven evaluation of teacher effectiveness. It also is being employed to quantify data collected for a future institutional evaluation required by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

"In addition to these applications, we've used Class Climate for the past three years to conduct student evaluations of faculty," Fulgham said.
